The listed Hotel Schwarzer Adler, located in the historic centre of Sterzing, underwent extensive renovation over a period of more than two years, transforming it into a contemporary hotel with a distinctive atmosphere while preserving its original character.

All areas of the over 500-year-old building were carefully modernised using high-quality materials, subtle and soft colour palettes, and selected design details, while historical elements such as ceilings, doors, tiled stoves, and flooring were meticulously preserved.

Across three floors, 28 individually and innovatively designed units with generous living spaces were created – some equipped with kitchenettes, others with private saunas – always with an emphasis on elegance and quality.

The spa area, featuring a gym, sauna, steam bath, ice fountain, and relaxation lounge, showcases how history and modernity can merge into a living monument with a distinctive aesthetic.

In the Schwemme restaurant, tones such as taupe and mocha were selected to lend warmth to the historic building fabric, while targeted lighting accents highlight key features, including the wall fresco by Albert Stolz.

The character of the wine cellar was retained through the preservation of the original stone walls and historical wooden beams.

Throughout the building, past and present intersect, and the colour black – from the German Schwarz, referencing the hotel’s name – appears as a recurring element woven consistently throughout the interior concept.

The main challenge lay in creating a symbiosis between the existing heritage and the expectations of the contemporary guest, all while respecting the building’s intrinsic spirit.
