Hotel Cristallo
G22 Projects was successful in the invited competition for the extension of Hotel Cristallo with its proposed design.
The brief called for an annex accommodating eight exclusive suites and an elegant wellness and spa area, with a heated outdoor pool as a key visual highlight.
The family-run hotel is located in La Villa in Alta Badia, in the heart of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage site, and offers, thanks to its orientation and generous glazing, impressive views of Mt Sas dla Crusc.
The concept envisaged connecting the existing building to the new extension via a simple linking corridor, allowing the new structure sufficient autonomy in its architectural expression. The contemporary volume follows the natural terrain and appears to emerge from the slope. A particular sense of magic is created by the cantilevered pool in exposed concrete with its distinctive glazing.
The new building maintains a direct relationship with the surrounding landscape. Locally occurring natural materials and colour tones are echoed in the façade. The coarse-textured, earth-coloured render, combined with the projecting untreated timber structure, reflects the character of the surrounding environment. Timber is the dominant material and complements the expansive glazed façades. A timber pergola roof provides protection for the terraces from sun and rain.
In the spatial layout of the wellness area, special attention was given to creating fluid sequences of spaces designed to offer guests a unique experience. For the interior finishes, emphasis was placed on natural, local, and high-quality materials. A recurring feature is the use of stone pine sourced from the hotel owner’s own forest.
